The MBA's Value? Debatable

The MBA's Value? Debatable
"The P&Q story is about the latest research from the Graduate Management Admission Council, which surveyed 4,135 business school alumni who received their degrees since 2000. The GMAC report paints a rosy picture of the MBA’s value, more or less what you’d expect from the publisher of the GMAT exam, which gives the organization a vested interest in drumming up b-school applications."

Hedge Funds Hit With Losses In 2011: Only Human?

Hedge Funds Hit With Losses In 2011: Only Human?
"Excuses, excuses, and more excuses.
Some of the best-known hedge fund managers have offered lots of excuses for underperforming the major stock market indexes last year, with many large funds posting double-digit losses.
In letters to investors, managers pointed to things like Europe's debt crisis, a slower-than-expected economic recovery in the United States, and unforeseen events like Japan's nuclear disaster all coming together to create a tricky trading environment that was characterized by big and often unpredictable swings in stock prices."

Why Latin American Stocks Could Get Hot

Why Latin American Stocks Could Get Hot
"There's an emerging group to watch in emerging-market hotspot Latin America: a swelling middle class.
This population shift is an important development for investors, especially those with a longer-term horizon. No longer will the economies of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and their neighbors have to rely primarily on strong global demand for commodities grown and mined in the region. Now, theinvestment story is shifting toward the improved income of a relatively young population. These days, many emerging countries have relatively low levels of unemployment and a better fiscal position compared with their developed counterparts."

QuantRec:Math meets the markets in derivatives trading

Math meets the markets in derivatives trading

" Dozens of books with titles such as "Meltdown," "Busted," and Scott Patterson's "The Quants" have chronicled the financial debacle of 2008. ("Quants" are money managers who use computer-driven, quantitative trading strategies.) Patterson's book describes a Sept. 18 meeting between Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and several U.S. senators. The credit markets were frozen, Bernanke said. "We could have a depression if we don't act quickly and decisively."

Many investors believe the crisis was precipitated by the highly leveraged, rapid-fire trading of Ph.D. quants working in banks and hedge funds. In "Pricing the Future," George Szpiro recounts the history of quantitative investing. The well-told story reveals how quants came to dominate financial markets, and explains why they may endanger your 401K.
The tale centers on derivatives, contracts that give the purchaser the right to buy or sell something at a given price for a given period. Common derivatives such as stock options are not new. Futures contracts were being traded in Paris 200 years ago. Back then, options trading was wildly speculative because nobody could figure out the relationship between the price of a stock and its option."

World's OLDEST Stockbroker trading STRONG at 105

".........
The participants' similar genetic makeup has made it possible for Barzilai's team to isolate a supergene called "CETP." The gene appears to have helped centenarians like Irving Kahn stay healthy longer.
"(Irving Kahn) has a gene that controls the good cholesterol," Barzilai said. "This is the HDL cholesterol. And we found that people who have this mutation in the gene have higher good cholesterol, but also they are protected from heart disease and from cognitive decline and Alzheimer's."
Researchers are currently developing a pill which they hope will mimic the supergene's anti-aging effects that have allowed people like Irving Kahn to drink from the fountain of youth."
